Relatives of a Black man killed by Ohio police are settling their suit
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Los Angeles Times): The family of a Black man killed by Ohio police in 2021 is settling their wrongful death lawsuit. The relatives of Andre Hill, who was fatally shot by Columbus police officer Adam Coy while unarmed, have reached a settlement with the city. Hill was shot in December 2020 as he exited a garage holding a cellphone, and his death sparked widespread outrage and protests against police brutality.
The settlement comes after Coy was fired and charged with murder, and it includes financial compensation for Hill’s family as well as commitments from the city to implement police reforms. These reforms are aimed at improving accountability and preventing future tragedies. The Hill family’s legal team emphasized that while no settlement can bring Andre back, they hope the changes will protect others from similar violence.
The lawsuit has drawn national attention, with advocates calling for further action to address systemic issues in law enforcement. Hill’s death is one of several high-profile cases in Ohio that have intensified scrutiny of police practices.
